Harada-san was an A6M2 Zero pilot serving on the Carrier Soryu, taking part in the Pearl Harbor, Indian Ocean, Darwin, and Midway operations. He understood how to use the mixed armament of his Zero to herd opponents into a kill position, claiming 19 victories. At Midway he led three Combat Air Patrols (CAP), two from the Soryu and the third from Hiryu after his home ship was crippled. During these sorties he claimed five American Torpedo bombers downed. Badly wounded in late 1942, Harada-san spent the remainder of the war as an instructor.
