The Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II served in the Regia Aeronautica throughout World War II. The new Re.2001 Falco II was an improvement of the original Re.2000, which was originally rejected by the Regia Aeronautica because of its poor engine. Despite being considered on par with the Macchi C.202, the Re.2001 was never produced to the same levels. Instead, the Re.2001 was primarily used as a night fighter, though plans and prototypes were developed converting the plane into a carrier-based fighter for the unfinished Aquila.
